Later Levels QOTM (July ’18) – The Wedding

The following is an answer to the Later Levels Question of the Month for July 2018. This month’s question comes from The Gaming Diaries, who has pitted the following: It is coming into wedding season, if the shops and people I know are anything to go by. So in that spirit, you and a plus-one are attending the gaming wedding of the year. Which video game character do you take to the wedding and which character gives you advice on what to wear?

Now, if there’s anyone that desperately needs fashion advice like Batman needs a throat lozenge, it’s me. I seriously cannot remember the last time I bought a fancy piece of new clothing.

Oh, wait…yeah I can:

So as you can see, I may need some help. (N.B. – If you’re wondering, my partner will not be seen with me in public if I wear these outside.)

But here’s the thing: suits and tuxes are just not me. I don’t look good in them, and many have tried. Additionally, no-one remains in their suit throughout the entire event anyway. You get the ceremony over and done with and then it’s all dancing and drinking (within reason) afterwards. So I need advice from someone who rocks a quasi-suit; just smart enough to get away with during the mushy stuff, but relaxed enough to fit right in at the bar and dancefloor. I have the perfect chap/sheriff/magical fable in mind:

 

Wedding Fashion Consultant: Bigby Wolf (The Wolf Among Us)

Bigby is the kind of dude who exudes cool from every pore. The type of guy who you wouldn’t mind lending your car to for the weekend, or who you wouldn’t mind your mother hanging around with. What are you going to do? He’s just too cool. Check out that ensemble: no need for a jacket, it’s completely unnecessary. A fitted shirt with sleeves rolled up, a loose skinny tie and an undone top-button. Remember that guy two years above you at school who, if you got their approval for anything, it felt like existential bliss? Mmmyep, that’s Bigby. If I could bring a tenth of his style and swagger to a wedding I’d be a happy man.

But, if you’ve played The Wolf Among Us, you might be aware that Bigby is not always the best company. He can be pretty intense at times, plus the inability to go more than five minutes without smoking a cigarette is definitely going to be off-putting to other guests. So for my plus-one, I’d want to bring someone who can sustain a good conversation, bring the funny, and maybe get into one or two hijinks.

 

Wedding Plus-One: Henry (Firewatch)

I loved Henry’s character while working my way through Firewatch, and on more than one occasion found myself wondering how fun he’d be to talk to in a social setting. In Firewatch he finds himself only able to converse with his boss Delilah via walkie-talkie, but was still able to be funny and irreverent, with some brilliant one-liners and and wacky dialogue. If that’s how funny he can be in that creatively-stifling environment, just imagine how witty and fun to chat with he’d be in an upbeat social setting, surrounded by friends, AND with a few beers in him. Get drunk enough and we might start pretending the tables are lookout towers and the ground is on fire! You know, if he got homesick for the Shoshone Forest that is.
