It’s here! Finally hitting last week, the Steam Summer Sale already has gamers chomping at the bit to part with their hard earned cash. I managed to buy a few games from my most wanted list, as well as some others that weren’t even on my radar for peanuts. I’ve spent a lot of time wading through the sea of green labels on the Steam store, and I’ve come up with five games currently on sale that are: a) hugely popular, and b) have had their prices slashed lower than a Jamaican limbo stick. So let’s get to it!
#5: The Wolf Among Us (60% off – now £7.59)
Without a doubt my favourite Telltale title. The Walking Dead series is great and all, but Telltale needs to stop pumping out other games and give us Season 2 of The Wolf Among Us already! After playing this title and being completely blown away, I went and bought the first volume of the Fables graphic novel it’s based on. Then the next one. And the next. You get the idea. For those who aren’t familiar with the premise, it more or less is the answer to the question: “If fairy-tale characters (eg. Snow White, Boy Blue, The Big Bad Wolf etc) were alive in today’s world, what would their existence be like?” Packed full of drama, murder-mystery action and branching gameplay, TWAU is a fantastic game that has never been more attractive to pull the trigger on.
#4: Dishonored (75% off – now £1.99)
This…this is just flat out robbery. Ordinarily this game is just £7.99 on the Steam store. For a triple-A game! And now it’s the price of a McDonald’s coffee?! I’ve played Dishonored for over 40 hours during my two complete playthroughs; getting that kind of value for £1.99 is mind-boggling. If you’ve never played it before stop reading this and go download it right now. It has a 96% positivity rating. You’re almost guaranteed to enjoy it. And even if you don’t, what have you lost?
#3: Outlast (80% off – now £2.99)
Brrr…not my bag. Not by a long shot. I have enough trouble with unsettling point-and-clicks, let alone outright first-person horrors. But one has to appreciate a good bargain, and £2.99 down from £14.99 is pretty darn sweet. Though I’m interested in the plot, I ended up watching a ‘Let’s Play’ video rather than play myself for fear of screaming every time a mutant-thing appeared, but if horror’s your thing, I’d definitely recommend.
#2: Tomb Raider (2013) (85% off – now £2.24)
Iconic. It was fantastic to see a Tomb Raider where (in my opinion) Lara Croft finally shrugs off the ‘sex-symbol’ image and becomes an actual three-dimensional character. We’ve all seen the early depictions of her, she doesn’t even look like a real person. At this crazy low price, it may be time to take advantage of this offer if you’ve been holding off on what The Escapist called: “The Tomb Raider you’ve wanted for years”.
#1: Half-life 1 AND 2 (90% off – now £0.71 each)
Man, where would video games be without the Half-life series? We’re talking about one of the greatest PC games of all time…for the price of a Snickers bar. No-brainer.
Anybody spent a little more than they should in the sale so far? Let me know in the comments!
